E-commerce website in Ghana with mobile money fulfilment

Ecommerce website development in Ghana starts with the checkout. Customers expect to pay by MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or card through a licensed gateway, and to know delivery fees and timing before they pay. Choose WooCommerce or Shopify for a standard catalogue, and custom development when you need multiple sellers, wholesale rules or an app sharing the same stock.

Ghanaian shoppers will forgive an ordinary product photo. They will not forgive a checkout that fails after they have already approved a MoMo prompt. This guide covers the decisions behind an online store that actually takes money in Ghana: platform, payments, delivery, stock and the people who run it. It is written for retailers and brands in Accra, Kumasi and Tema, and for anyone moving sales off Instagram and WhatsApp.

What an online store must answer in Ghana

On the product page and at checkout, a Ghanaian customer wants four answers:

  1. Can I pay with my wallet? MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AT Money, or a card.
  2. When will I get it, and do you deliver to my area?
  3. What happens if the payment prompt fails?
  4. Who do I call, and will they pick up?

If those answers live only in a WhatsApp broadcast, the site is a catalogue, not a store. That can be fine. A business website from GH₵4,499 with WhatsApp chat integration, SEO and social media links is the right first step for many sellers, but it should not be called ecommerce.

WooCommerce, Shopify or custom development?

PED builds all three: WooCommerce stores, Shopify stores and custom shops. The right one depends on your catalogue, your team and how the store connects to the rest of the business.

WooCommerce (WordPress)

A common choice for Ghana SMEs. You control the hosting, payment plugins exist for the main Ghana gateways, and your team can add products without a developer.

  • Choose it for a standard catalogue and a team that is comfortable in WordPress.
  • Avoid it for multi-vendor marketplaces, complex wholesale pricing, or when a mobile app must share the same cart logic.

Shopify

Fast to launch, with a strong admin and no servers to look after.

  • Choose it if speed matters most and you accept Shopify’s way of doing things.
  • Check first which Ghana payment options work with your plan, how payouts reach you, and how the subscription is billed.

Custom development

Your own checkout, stock rules and admin, for example built on Laravel. This is how you build a marketplace, a dealer portal or a store that shares stock with branches and an app.

  • Choose it when the store is the business, or when custom software already holds your stock.
  • Avoid it for a small catalogue. Custom checkout is wasted money if you skip proper payment testing.

BYOB, a commerce and logistics platform we built is an example of the custom route: one platform with web portals for dispatch, warehousing, sales and storefronts, plus three Android apps, all reading the same stock. For the broader website stack decision, see brochure, WordPress or custom.

Payment gateways: Hubtel, PaySwitch, Paystack and others

Under the Payment Systems and Services Act, 2019 (Act 987), non-bank payment service providers need a Bank of Ghana licence, and the Bank of Ghana publishes the list of licensed providers. Use a licensed (or properly partnered) gateway that takes mobile money and cards in one checkout.

  • Hubtel and PaySwitch are Ghana gateways for mobile money, covering MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money. PED has integrated both.
  • Paystack is widely used with WooCommerce in Ghana, and its documentation covers MTN, AT and Telecel Cash.
  • PayPal and Stripe cover card and international payments, useful for diaspora buyers. PED has integrated PayPal, and has used Stripe to take foreign payments for foreign companies. Stripe’s availability page routes Ghana-based businesses to Paystack, so a standard Stripe account generally needs a business registered in a Stripe-supported country.

Choose on settlement time, support quality, plugin or API quality, and whether your accountant gets an export they trust. Fees change, so check each gateway’s current Ghana pricing page before you set your margins.

Checkout design for MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash

The customer leaves your site to approve a prompt on their phone. Design for that gap:

Shopper paying for an online order with mobile money on an Android phone

  • Show the total in GH₵, including delivery, before the payment step.
  • Say “approve the prompt on your phone” in plain words.
  • Check payment status automatically, with no endless spinner.
  • Offer an “I have paid” path that creates a ticket for follow-up.
  • Send an SMS or WhatsApp receipt. Many customers won’t see an email.

If you offer cash on delivery, price it honestly and state it up front.

Delivery zones across Accra, Tema and Kumasi

Delivery in Ghana varies by city and area. A serious store has:

Stylised map of delivery zones around Accra and Tema with a dispatch rider

  • Zones with honest fees and cut-off times, for example within Accra, Accra to Tema, and other cities.
  • A packing process with a named owner.
  • An “out for delivery” status the customer can see, or is told about.
  • A return and refund rule you will actually honour.

If you only deliver within Accra for now, say so. Clarity converts better than a fake tracking number.

Stock, promotions and festive peaks

Ghanaian retail has peaks: month-end paydays, Christmas, Eid, Easter and school reopening. Your store must let a staff member change a price or hide a product without calling a developer. Keep buffers for advertised products. Nothing burns trust faster than a MoMo debit followed by an “out of stock” message.

Shop storeroom with packed orders ready for a festive sales peak

If you sell in a shop and online, the two should share stock. If they can’t yet, list a smaller range online until the counts match.

Product pages that get found on Google

  • One product, one URL, one clear title: “Men’s leather sandal, size 42, Accra delivery” beats “Product 12”.
  • Write your own descriptions rather than copying the supplier’s.
  • Compress images so pages load fast on mobile data.
  • Use variants (size, colour) instead of duplicate products.

Pair the store with digital marketing only once the checkout works. Ads that send people to a broken MoMo flow just waste the budget.

The people behind the store

Software cannot replace these jobs. It can only make them faster:

  • Updating stock daily.
  • Answering “where is my order?” quickly.
  • Reconciling gateway payouts to the bank.
  • Handling disputes and refunds by a written policy.

Data protection

An online store collects names, phone numbers and addresses. Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) applies. Collect only what you need, protect admin access, and never reuse customers’ numbers for marketing they did not agree to. PED has helped companies become compliant with Act 843 and builds access rules into the scope.

Frequently asked questions

Can my ecommerce website accept MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash?

Yes, through a payment gateway. PED has integrated Hubtel and PaySwitch, which take MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money, and PayPal for cards and international payments. Stripe suits stores run by companies registered abroad. Paystack is another gateway commonly used in Ghana.

Is WooCommerce or Shopify better for a store in Ghana?

WooCommerce suits a standard catalogue when you want control of hosting and Ghana payment plugins. Shopify is faster to launch. PED builds on both, and also builds custom shops. Check payment and payout options for Ghana before choosing.

Is PED’s GH₵4,499 website an online store?

No. It is a business site with WhatsApp chat integration, SEO setup, social media links and a free domain and hosting for the first year, and it can take mobile money. A full shop with its own stock and checkout rules is a larger job, scoped per project.

Do I need a mobile app as well as the store?

Usually not at first. A fast mobile website with MoMo checkout beats a thin shopping app. Add an app when repeat orders justify it. See our guide to mobile app development in Ghana.

What payment gateway licence should I look for in Ghana?

Non-bank payment service providers need a Bank of Ghana licence under Act 987. Check the gateway, or its banking partner, against the Bank of Ghana’s published list of licensed providers.
