Laravel development in Ghana means building web applications on Laravel, the PHP framework. It suits portals, dashboards, marketplaces, booking systems and business software that need accounts, payments and an admin. Laravel runs on affordable hosting, PHP developers are widely available in Accra and Kumasi, and it handles MTN MoMo gateway callbacks cleanly.
Laravel is one of several stacks PED Solution Studios uses often, and not the only one. We pick the stack to fit the job. This guide explains when Laravel is the right fit and when it isn’t, how a Laravel project is put together, and what to ask when you hire a Laravel team in Ghana.
What Laravel is, in plain terms
Laravel is an open-source framework for PHP, the language behind a large share of the web. It gives developers ready-made, well-tested building blocks for things almost every business system needs:
- user accounts, logins and password resets;
- roles and permissions (who can see and do what);
- a database layer for orders, customers, stock and records;
- queues for slow jobs such as sending SMS, emails and reports;
- scheduled tasks, such as nightly reconciliation;
- APIs for mobile apps;
- testing tools.
Because those parts are standard, more of the budget goes on your actual workflow.
When Laravel is the right fit
- Business systems with an admin: operations, inventory, HR, school and clinic tools. See operations software.
- Customer portals where clients log in to see orders, invoices or bookings.
- Marketplaces with buyers, sellers and an operator. For example, Equipment Hub, a heavy-machinery marketplace we built on Laravel, MySQL, Livewire, Alpine.js and Tailwind.
- Backends for mobile apps. A Laravel API behind a React Native or native Android app.
- Payment-heavy flows where callbacks, retries and reconciliation must be exact.
When Laravel isn’t the right fit
Laravel fits many business systems, but not everything. Choosing it for the wrong job costs you money twice: once to build, and again to replace.
- A simple brochure site. A content-managed website is faster and cheaper to build and to run. See PED’s business websites.
- A standard online shop. WooCommerce or Shopify may be enough. PED builds both, as well as custom shops.
- A problem a subscription already solves. If a packaged tool fits, use it. See custom software vs ready-made tools.
- A product that is mostly the app. When almost everything happens on the phone, the important decision is the mobile stack, such as React Native. The backend is then chosen to fit the app, and it may or may not be Laravel.
- Heavy real-time or very high-traffic features. Live chat, streaming data or very high request volumes can be served by Laravel with the right setup, but sometimes another runtime suits that part better. A good team will say so.
- Your team already runs another stack. If your in-house developers know a different framework well, building in it may be easier to maintain than switching to Laravel.
The honest answer to “should we use Laravel?” is “it depends on the job”. Be wary of any studio, including us, that gives the same answer for every project.
How a Laravel application is put together
When PED builds on Laravel, the stack often looks like this, though it changes with the job:
| Layer | Common choice |
|---|---|
| Framework | Laravel (PHP) |
| Database | MySQL |
| Interactive screens | Livewire with Alpine.js, or React through Inertia |
| Styling | Tailwind CSS |
| Mobile apps | React Native, talking to a Laravel API |
| Payments | Hubtel or PaySwitch for MoMo; PayPal for cards; Stripe for foreign companies |
Livewire or React? Livewire keeps most logic on the server and suits admin-heavy systems built quickly. React through Inertia suits screens with a lot of interaction in the browser. Both run on the same Laravel backend.
Laravel and mobile money in Ghana
Payments are where a framework earns its keep. A Laravel app typically:
- creates an order with a unique reference;
- requests the charge from a gateway such as Hubtel or PaySwitch, so the customer approves an MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AT Money prompt;
- receives the gateway’s callback on a dedicated route;
- verifies it and checks the status with the gateway;
- processes it in a queued job, marking the order paid exactly once;
- sends a receipt by SMS or email in the background.
Laravel’s queues, scheduled tasks and database transactions make steps 4–6 reliable, including the nightly job that compares your records to the gateway’s settlement report.
Hosting a Laravel app for Ghanaian users
Laravel runs on standard Linux servers with PHP and MySQL. That includes many affordable hosts and cloud servers. For business systems, plan for:
- a server you or your developer can access, in your company’s account;
- automatic daily backups, stored away from the server;
- SSL, so every page is HTTPS;
- a queue worker and scheduler running all the time;
- monitoring and error alerts;
- a staging copy to test changes before they go live.
Agree in writing who owns the hosting account and the code repository.
Keeping a Laravel application healthy after launch
A Laravel system that runs your business needs looking after, like a vehicle. Budget for:
- Framework and package updates. Laravel and PHP release updates and security fixes regularly. Staying close to current versions avoids an expensive jump later.
- Security patches for the server, PHP and the database.
- Backups that are tested. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan.
- Monitoring. Error alerts, failed-job alerts for the queue, and uptime checks, so problems are fixed before customers call.
- Small changes. New report columns, a new branch in Kumasi, a new payment method. These are normal, so agree how they are requested and priced.
- Documentation. Enough notes that another Laravel developer could take over if needed.
Ask any Laravel team, including PED, to put the post-launch arrangement in writing before the build starts.
Hiring a Laravel developer or team in Accra
Questions worth asking:
- Show me a live Laravel system you built and still maintain. Maintenance tells you more than launch.
- How do you handle payment callbacks? You want to hear “verify, check status, idempotent update, queued”.
- Do you write automated tests? At least for payments, permissions and money calculations.
- How do you deploy? Look for version control, a staging environment and repeatable deployments, not FTP uploads to the live server.
- Who owns the code and the server? It should be you.
- What happens after launch? Updates, security patches and a support channel.
A freelancer can build a small Laravel tool. For systems that run a business, a team gives you cover when someone is unavailable. Whoever you hire, start with a small paid first milestone, such as one working workflow in production, before committing to the whole system. It shows you how the team communicates, tests and deploys, at low risk.
Laravel at PED Solution Studios
PED Solution Studios is an Accra software studio, founded in 2011. Laravel is one of several stacks PED uses often, alongside React, React Native for mobile apps, and WordPress, WooCommerce or Shopify for websites and stores. PED picks the stack to fit the need rather than starting from a house default. Projects are scoped per project after a call, as part of custom software and apps. PED builds web and Android first, and iOS when the job needs it.
Two examples where Laravel was the right fit:
- BYOB, a commerce and logistics platform built on Laravel, Inertia and React, with six web portals and three React Native apps for iOS and Android.
- Thirdspace, a gear and crew rental marketplace in Accra, built on Laravel, Inertia and React.
See the studio page and work for the tools used on each job.
Frequently asked questions
What is Laravel used for?
Laravel is a PHP framework for building web applications: portals, dashboards, marketplaces, booking systems, business software and APIs for mobile apps.
Is Laravel good for business software in Ghana?
Yes, for many systems. It handles accounts, roles, payments and background jobs well, and runs on affordable hosting.
Can a Laravel app take MTN MoMo payments?
Yes. A Laravel app can connect to gateways such as Hubtel or PaySwitch to take MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money, and handle callbacks and reconciliation reliably.
Laravel or WordPress?
WordPress suits content sites and simple shops. Laravel suits systems with logins, workflows, roles and payments that a plugin cannot handle well.
Does PED Solution Studios only build with Laravel?
No. Laravel is one of several stacks PED uses often, alongside React, React Native, WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify. The stack is picked to fit the job after a scoping call.
